The Electric City Culture Council (EC3) and the 2023 Artsweek Team are pleased to announce a stellar line up of 12 signature programs, and nearly 100 artists in 40 events across the City from May 5th – May 14th, at this year’s Artsweek Festival. The Festival is, as always, a colourful and compelling cornucopia of dance, theatre, poetry, visual arts, film, puppetry, and music of all kinds, featuring woodland animals, pyrotechnic artists, mysterious clowns, dazzling dancers, poems a la carte, front porch concerts, art in the trees – and it’s all FREE!
This year’s Festival brings audiences the best in new work by talented local artists with the theme “Art in Unexpected Places”, so be sure to catch Artsweek events at the Riverview Park and Zoo, outside the Peterborough Public Library, Millennium Park, Peterborough Square, the Downtown Farmers’ Market, outside the MNR, on Armour Hill, and more.
Artsweek brings new work to new audiences in unexpected places, supports original creation by local artists, and celebrates Peterborough as an innovative, creative community with a vibrant arts scene.
On behalf of the EC3 Board, staff, and the Artsweek 2023 Team, we cordially invite you to attend the Opening Ceremonies and Official Launch of Artsweek on May 5th at 6:30 pm in the Commerce Building Courtyard, 2 Bankers Common (access via Watson and Lou alleyway, near Hunter and Water).
Mayor Jeff Leal will be there to proclaim May 5th – 14th 2023 as ARTSWEEK in the City of Peterborough and say a few words about the Festival. He will be joined by Terry Guiel from the DBIA and Councillor Alex Bierk (Arts, Culture, and Heritage).
You won’t want to miss special guests the UNITY Singers, Hank Fisher (Washboard Hank), poet Justin Million’s typewriter performance, spoken word poet Laurin Isiekwena, some woodland creatures on stilts, a fire eater or two, and more…
The Opening Ceremonies are followed by Jennifer Elchuck’s magnificent stilt walking promenade Woodland and the Wilds at 7:30 pm; a performance by the acclaimed musician Benj Rowland behind Black Honey on Hunter St at 8:00pm and 8:45pm; a must see, not to be missed, utterly astounding, concert by Charlie Glasspool and Co. called 3C84, about one of the galaxy’s most awe-inspiring phenomena, on Armour Hill at 9:00pm. Stargazing to follow.
It’s a spectacular Opening Night, because you can also take in the marvels of May’s First Friday Art Crawl.
Artsweek is produced and presented by the Electric Culture Council every other year. A legacy project of the City of Peterborough’s Centennial Celebrations in 2005, Artsweek is supported by funders: the City of Peterborough, Peterborough DBIA, Canadian Heritage, and the Ontario Arts Council.
