POP-UP ARTS : Artist Profiles
POP 1: Trent Radio – trentradio.ca – Trent Radio (92.7 CFFF FM) – is Peterborough’s Community Broadcast Facility. Sponsored by full-time Trent University students, it is a non-profit cultural and educational organisation shared and organised with the community as a whole.
Its aims and objectives include broad community participation for the production of creative local radio which reflects and animates Peterborough area communities, and sends out a clear signal of Peterborough’s vigour and vibrancy to the world beyond.
POP 2: #eCityLit
Laura Rock Gaughan – Laura Rock Gaughan’s fiction has appeared (under the name Laura Rock) in Canadian, Irish and US publications including Kindred, The New Quarterly, The Antigonish Review, and Southword, among others. Her essays have been published in The Globe & Mail and the non-fiction anthology, How to Expect What You’re Not Expecting (TouchWood Editions, 2013). One of her stories was awarded 2nd Place in the 2011 Sean O’Faolain Short Story Competition, and has since been published in the ten-year Contest Anthology (Munster Literature Centre, 2013). A new story is forthcoming in The New Quarterly, and she also keeps a blog rolling along at variable speeds: http://www.laurairock.blogspot.ca/p/writing-of-course.html.
POP 3: Write on the Street
Janette Platana – JanettePlatana.com – Janette Platana’s collection of short stories, A TOKEN OF MY AFFLICTION, was shortlisted for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Prize in 2015. She collaborates with artists and community activists through ABCD – Arts Based Core Development. Write On The Street is an ABCD project.

Peterborough Inspired Education – A diverse group of engaged parents and educators, Peterborough Inspired Education formed in 2012 to create options for alternative education that are inclusive, responsive, and based on principles of social justice, decolonization, nature connection, and community involvement.
Pop 6: The Healing Art of Kintsugi
Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to supporting those affected by sexual violence as well as raising public awareness around the need to better address conditions, laws and attitudes that contribute to ongoing cycles of violence. Our catchment area includes the city of Peterborough, the counties of Peterborough, Northumberland, Haliburton and the City of Kawartha Lakes.
Cheryl Wood has practiced Expressive Arts for over a decade, earning both an Expressive Arts Certification and a Social Service Workers diploma from Fleming College. Before working at Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre, and offering expressive arts through the Children’s Grief Group at Peterborough Hospice, Cheryl practiced expressive arts in the educational system.

Mysterious Entity:
Mysterious Entity, founded in 2000, is an incorporated not-for-profit company dedicated to fostering positive social change through the creation and production of theatre. Our mission includes the creation of new, socially-relevant theatre works, and staging classic plays with a twist. We forge alliances among artists, and between artists and non-arts organizations. Our work explores mental health, race, gender, sexuality, and issues facing youth. We are based outside the urban context, with the belief that there are stories that need to be voiced in every community. We mentor and provide a training ground for emerging talent, promote diversity, and engage artists in play development and theatre production. We aim to contribute to the further development of Canadian live theatre.
David Bateman: David was born in Peterborough in 1956, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. As a poet and performance artist he has produced a large body of work, much of which has been concerned with investigating and re-imagining the experiences he began to nurture in Peterborough. His work expands globally, and he has performed in international venues. His frequent use of drag performance has engendered a body of work that analyzes both gender and social/cultural agency.
Em Glasspool: Em Glasspool is a Peterborough-based theatre artist who has been involved in many different aspects of production, including: directing, acting, writing and music. Em is the artistic director of Mysterious Entity Theatre.
Em holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Trent University, and has studied theatre craft, and/or collaborated with many esteemed artists, including: Robert Winslow, Diana Reis, David Smuckler, Tomson Highway, Mike Kinnard, Ker Wells, Fides Krucker, Bill James, Andy Jones, and recently completed a directing course with Edward Daranyi at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
